Southern Madagascar
Southern Madagascars has got a very diverse and attractive landscape. Along the N7 the road passes pretty rice terraces, savannahs, rugged rocks of Isalo National Park until Tuléar, the region's capital city. In Ifaty - north of Tuléar you will find the best places for diving and fine sandy beaches.
Along the southern tip of the island until Fort Dauphin there is an unreal and arid area that is characterised by bizarre succulents and hard to pass by car.
Fort Dauphin is a coastal town with a small harbour in the south east of the red island. Close by there is a 240 ha private reserve Berenty that stretches along the river Mandrare and consists of tamarind trees and sisal plantations.
The local fauna like picky shrubs, ancient baobabs, succulents and many more are adapted to the extreme drought and characterise the 'thorn landscape' of the south. The park reflects as well the impressive fauna of Madagascar. The most southern point is called Cap Sainte Marie.
