Johannesburg/Pretoria

In Greater Johannesburg today live more than 8 million people, it is therefore the largest metropolitan area in Southern Africa. The city itself has got more than 3,2 million inhabitants. Though it is the most important commercial center, the capital city is ca. 50 km up north and called Pretoria or Tshwane, where about 1,8 million people live. The highest building in Africa with 220 m height is the Carlton Center which is a shopping center in Johannesburg. From the 50th floor you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city centre.  Further sights are the Museum Africa, Apartheids Museum, Constitution Hill Museum, Lesedi Cultural Village and the Botanical Garden. Pretoria is characterised by a mixture of vibrant life and quiet suburban idyll. Worth visiting are among others the Church Square, that is for more than 130 years the centre of the old "white" Pretoria, Transvaal Museum of Natural History, Union Building and Voortrekker Monument, that has been built for the founders of the former South African Republic for their courage and determination. From this point you have a beautiful panoramic view over the city. In spring more than 70.000 Jacaranda trees are blooming purple - an exceptional beauty for visitors. Due to criminality visitors should always participate in guided tours.
